Intense gusts reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 households experiencing outages and led authorities to halt in excess of 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

The gales are influencing the whole South Island and southern sections of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have released infrequent high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions including Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been urged to stay indoors, avoid travel, and get ready for further electricity and network failures.

Broad Damage and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the southern region, while agencies state that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being impacted by a falling limb at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was blown onto moving cars on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services in and out of the city have been suspended because of the weather, whereas certain highways and community centers are shut down.

At the same time Canterbury officials have announced a state of emergency, to assist emergency management operations.
