British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
